Xunantunich

 

        Xunantunich (Maiden of the Rock)- Near western border at San Jose Succoth. reached by hand-cranked car ferry across Mopan River. Major Maya site.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Xunantunich-Located in the extreme western part of the Cayo District. It also one of the largest and most impressive ceremonial centers in the Belize River Valley. Mush restoration has recently given Xunantunich a new look. It is a major ceremonial center located on a limestone ridge, providing a panoramic view  of Cayo.

Glyphs and symbols place the rulers in kingship with the heavens. The site museum holds two impressive steal and an excellent exhibit at he entrance.

 

Walk through lush, tropical forest and enter a captivating world of antiquity as an ancient Maya pyramid suddenly appears. Climbing steep, narrow steps to the top, everything above seem small, yet precious. High above , like the ancient priests and rulers, you may feel closer to the gods; the heavens just out reach...

Belize's Maya archaeological sites are an ancient herald form a lost era. They are a reminder that within these primeval jungles there once existed a great civilization, one that reached it's glory when Paris was just a small village. This was a cultural fluorescence that listed longer than the Roman Empire.
